Dolphin’s Den cavern dive, Roatan Island, July 2020
Cavern dive using sidemount gear and a 100-meter primary reel. Dolphin's Den is a dive site located in front of Punta Gorda, a Garifuna village, and the name origin is because some dolphin's sometimes get trapped inside the coral labyrinth without the possibility to get to the surface and breath.
What sets Dolphin’s Den apart is its remarkable underwater architecture. As you descend into the site, you are greeted by a labyrinth of caverns, arches, and swim-throughs that create an exhilarating sense of exploration. The tunnels, some of which are wide enough to comfortably accommodate divers, lead you through a mesmerizing underwater world that feels like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
The play of light within the caverns adds to the mystique of the site. Sunlight filtering through the narrow openings creates stunning displays of light and shadow, enhancing the ethereal beauty of the underwater environment. This interplay of light and darkness gives the site an almost otherworldly ambiance, making every dive here a truly unique experience.
Diving Experience
Dolphin’s Den is suitable for divers of all skill levels, though some experience with cave or cavern diving is recommended to fully appreciate the site’s unique features. The maximum depth at Dolphin’s Den is around 40 feet (12 meters), making it accessible to recreational divers. However, the complex layout of the tunnels, water slack, and the potential for low visibility in some areas require careful navigation and a good sense of spatial awareness.
Guided dives are highly recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with the site. Local dive guides possess an intimate knowledge of the tunnels and can safely lead divers through the intricate passages while pointing out hidden marine life and sharing fascinating stories about the site’s history.
