When the pandemic hit in early 2020, it left no industry untouched, and scuba diving was no exception. Dive shops, training centers, and dive resorts worldwide had to close their doors indefinitely. Among those affected were four PADI IDC candidates who had traveled from different corners of the globe to Roatan, ready to take the next big step in their diving careers. Little did they know that they were about to embark on a journey filled with unexpected challenges.

Meet Sonia from Russia, Gala from Uruguay, Quentin from Belgium, and Jessica from Spain. These four candidates arrived in Roatan, full of excitement and determination, ready to complete their Instructor Development Course (IDC) and take the PADI Instructor Exam (IE). However, halfway through the process, the world came to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The IDC was completed, but the final IE was canceled as countries went into lockdown.

A Halt to Progress

Imagine the frustration of coming so far, only to be told you couldn’t move forward. For Sonia, Gala, Quentin, and Jessica, this was a test of patience and resilience. Instead of dwelling on the uncertainty, they decided to stay focused. They kept in touch with each other, reviewed course materials, and continued practicing skills even during the lockdown, always keeping their dream of becoming PADI Instructors alive.

The Long Wait Ends

After months of waiting, travel restrictions finally lifted, and diving operations began to resume with new safety protocols. Roatan reopened, and it was time for these determined IDC candidates to complete what they had started. Despite the break, they showed up with renewed energy and confidence, proving that time and distance had only strengthened their resolve.

Each candidate passed their IE with flying colors. Their journey may have been delayed, but it was this delay that added to their growth as divers and future instructors.

  • Sonia from Russia: Her meticulous approach and dedication paid off, and today she is helping others in her home country discover the underwater world.

  • Gala from Uruguay: Known for her infectious enthusiasm, she has become a source of inspiration for many aspiring divers.

  • Quentin from Belgium: With a calm demeanor and a passion for teaching, he has already begun mentoring new divers in his local diving community.

  • Jessica from Spain: Her perseverance and adaptability have made her a sought-after instructor in the Mediterranean dive scene.

Because my candidates did not had the chance to compete their IE all together on Roatan, due to COVID-19, here we post an AI generated photo representing their graduation ceremony's! :-)

A Lesson in Resilience

This story is a testament to how passion, patience, and perseverance can overcome even the most unexpected obstacles. The IDC and IE process is never easy, but for these four candidates, the challenges they faced during the pandemic have made their success even more meaningful.

Their journey is a reminder to all aspiring divers that setbacks are temporary, and with the right mindset, any obstacle can be overcome.
